About me.
I’m Jess, I’m a heart-centred counsellor and the founder of Universal Roots Counselling.
I have a BA Degree dual hons in Social Policy and Criminology and a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.
My roots are in the Yorkshire countryside and I believe that growing up in nature has inspired a lot of the way I live my own life as a woman, wife and mother, whilst also influencing my therapeutic process.
I have always found people incredibly interesting and I love the fact that everyone is so unique and different, but as humans, we share so many experiences that are the same.
I have always been a highly sensitive person, picking up on the energies of the environment and others around me. I would often feel overwhelmed and was labelled as the “sensitive one”, however, learning to regulate my nervous system and connect with and feel into my sensitivities, has allowed me to help myself and others on a much deeper level. Earlier in my life, friends and family would often trust me with their personal issues and from these experiences it quite naturally led me to a career in counselling.
Ways I Work.
Our sessions are free flowing, allowing you to experience a whole spectrum of emotions - we’ll laugh, we’ll cry, we’ll go through heartbreak together. Along the way, we will meet different parts of your psyche and inner self. You will learn to connect with and listen to these parts of yourself so that you can gain the inner wisdom and integrate these parts of the self which may have been repressed or rejected, allowing your true self to come into alignment. Our sessions are a way to find and face new and hidden parts of yourself and greet them lovingly.
I like to visualise our work together as a journey into a dark forest, and although we may not know where we are going at times, some paths may seem scary or uncertain, I can help you to find the light within yourself that will guide you on your journey of self discovery and healing.
I want people to be able to feel more with their hearts instead of living in their heads. To help humans alchemise their pain and trauma into something more loving and purposeful, so that the pain and shame that many of us carry no longer controls our path ahead and the way we treat ourselves and others. Our sessions together are like a journey that you do not have to take alone, a journey back to your true self full of love, empowerment, purpose and resilience.
Heart Centred.
Whilst working with the body and regulating your nervous system to create a sense of safety, we will also work through your thoughts, feelings and emotions, helping you to have a good understanding of what is going on for you personally.
You will learn to connect with your heart to create a more loving, compassionate and understanding relationship with yourself. This will help you to process shame and judgement and reprogram old limiting beliefs and thought patterns. I will help you to drop into your body and connect with the feelings, sensations and emotions which may be present, allowing you to be with them and process them as necessary. Often, a client needs to work through layers of blocks and emotions in order to get to the root of an issue, and so I will help you to understand this process and work through your overwhelming emotions and limiting beliefs along the way.
Regulation and Grounding.
The process for each client is different, I use a range of techniques to support the needs of each individual. As human beings, we share collective needs - to feel safe, seen, heard and loved. Sadly for many, these basic needs have gone unmet for lifetimes leaving many of us feeling disconnected and living in survival mode.
Initially, our work together is around building trust, safety and capacity within the mind-body and nervous system. This may simply be through talking and psychoeducation, through various somatic movements, polyvagal touch exercises, gentle breathwork and visualisation exercises. Achieving a sense of grounding and regulation enables us to better regulate our emotions and to not tip into a state of overwhelm. We learn to detect and listen to our body’s natural boundaries, what feels safe, what feels pleasurable and what feels too much. When we are able to regulate, we are able to allow our mind and bodies to release the stored survival stress, emotions and blocks, helping to create a sense of balance and calmness in our lives.
Somatic Shift.
We cannot think our pain and trauma away, we must feel in order to heal. Our bodies sense and feel, move and store emotions, while our minds make interpretations, meanings and beliefs. They are connected, so if we truly want to heal we must align our bodies and minds and work with them together. This is why Universal Roots takes an holistic approach to mental and emotional wellbeing, taking into account the mind, body and energetic system as a whole, as well as looking at the way our environment, culture and society have affected us both individually and collectively.
During our time together, I will help you to quieten your mind and to feel safe in your body by helping you to regulate your nervous system. This will enable you to somatically connect to the innate wisdom of your body, allowing the intuitive and natural processes to take place and complete from within so that you can begin to let go.
I will help you to somatically connect, listen to and communicate with yourself, allowing repressed energies and emotions to come to the surface to be processed and released. I will talk with you and counsel you through your experience, supporting your mind and body through a somatic shift.
Somatic shifts and releases may feel like yawning, shaking, hot and cold, shivering, sweating, screaming, shouting, crying, humming, tensing, posture changes, bodily and facial movements or a simple change in breathing patterns. We will work together so that it feels safe and manageable and you can begin to understand the unique language of your body.
